Computer Document Analysis
Many digitally generated files such as documents, spreadsheets and some picture formats contain metadata (data about data). The metadata can be useful for helping to determine accurately where, when and by whom a specific file was created. Below are a couple of examples where computer document analysis can yield useful information:
- Microsoft Word Documents
Microsoft Word documents contain creation, modification and last printed dates within the file; these may differ from the dates seen when the file is viewed using Microsoft Window Explorer or the Microsoft Word properties option. The document may also contain information which assists in identifying the 'authors' and "last authors name" and details of amendments.
- Picture Files
A picture file may contain Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) information which identifies the make and model of camera or mobile phone which created the picture and the dates within the file may also show an accurate date when the file was created.
Computer document analysis is an extremely useful service when forged documents are suspected or multiple versions of a document are in dispute.
